Company History

Maintaining a leading role in the construction industry since 1975

At Al Mashrik, we’ve built 40+ years of success on strong foundations.

Those foundations include the strength of our team, the depth of our expertise, and our enduring and unerring commitment to excellence. Today, Al Mashrik is one of Saudi Arabia’s premier contractors—as well as an industry leader.

1955-1975: The Early Years

Though Al Mashrik was not formally established until 1975, our founder embarked on the career that would shape it years earlier. In 1955, Shiakh Abdullah Altowaijri was a young man who loved the possibilities contracting offered. He was thrilled by the idea of creating new structures that enhanced and vitalized communities. At that time in Riyadh, though, there was not enough opportunity in contracting for a young man to start his career.

So Shiakh Abdullah moved to Kuwait, where he joined Alkurafi group. He relished the work, and his skills and leadership grew. Soon he was assigned to lead operations in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. His experience in Alkurafi group refined his vision and propelled him to found the company that would become Al Mashrik.

1975-1985: Building an Industry at Home

In 1975, Shiakh Abdullah returned to Riyadh to found Al Mashrik. The company’s first projects were in the field of roads and highways. Success built upon success with the execution of many highways, roads, and bridges in Saudi Arabia. Al Mashrik’s excellent work attracted notice early on, and the company’s reputation grew. In 1983, Al Mashrik was classified as a tier 1 contractor in roads and highways. Business was picking up.

1985-1990: Growth Strategies

While these early successes held promise, Shiakh Abdullah knew that to grow, Al Mashrik would need to diversify its project base. Although Al Mashrik continued to bid on—and successfully complete—road infrastructure projects, it also expanded its focus to include building projects. Early bids landed new contracts in this category. And, once again, the company quickly built momentum.

By 1988, Al Mashrik had executed an array of turnkey projects successfully and earned classification as a tier 1 contractor in the buildings field.

Additional diversification spurred continued success. By 1990, Al Mashrik had also distinguished itself in the maintenance field. Successful execution of a variety of projects earned a tier 1 contractor classification yet again.

1990 to Present: Expansion and Industry Leadership

Soon, Al Mashrik had earned credentials and recognition as a general contractor prepared to execute any kind of project. What had started small in 1975 had become a company capable of
complex, large-scale projects with multiple stakeholders and high visibility. Al Mashrik had become an industry leader.

In recent years, growth and diversification have continued. Over the last 40+ years, Al Mashrik has led significant projects in roads, buildings, infrastructure development, telecommunications, and the electrical and mechanical fields.

In addition, Al Mashrik has established other ventures to complement the core contracting business. Other non-related businesses—including trading, telecommunications, information technology, real estate investment, cybersecurity, and military defense—bolster our capabilities and expertise. Partnership with joint ventures in international markets have further enhanced and evolved company capabilities.

Today, by living the vision, continuing to push the boundaries of our work, and giving back, Al Mashrik’s leadership and employees strive to build ever higher on the foundations laid years ago.

Each day, the team strives toward the company vision: “To be the country’s premier contractor and employer of choice by achieving unmatched results for the benefit of our customers, shareholders, employees, and the communities we serve.”

To Al Mashrik’s leadership and team, being part of a community means committing to stewardship. Al Mashrik employees and clients share space in a community—at work and at home. Being part of a community also means giving back—which Al Mashrik does, by making donations to Saudi Arabia’s universities to promote higher education and its promise to lift us.

We strive to take our performance to the next level time after time.

By 1990, successful execution of a variety of projects earned another tier 1 contractor classification.
